Schauspieler
Tom London
Tom London (24. August 1889 – 5. Dezember 1963) war ein US-amerikanischer Veteranenschauspieler, der häufig in B-Western mitwirkte. Laut dem Guinness-Buch der Filmrekorde gilt Tom London als der Schauspieler mit den meisten Filmauftritten in der Geschichte Hollywoods. Diese Angabe stammt aus dem 2001 erschienenen Buch „Film Facts“, in dem es heißt, der Schauspieler mit den meisten Filmauftritten sei „Tom London“ gewesen, der 1903 in „Der große Eisenbahnraub“ seinen ersten von über 2000 Auftritten hatte.
Geboren als Leonard Clapham in Louisville, Kentucky, begann er seine Filmkarriere als Requisiteur in Chicago, Illinois. Sein Debüt gab er 1915 in dem Western „Lone Larry“, in dem er unter seinem bürgerlichen Namen auftrat. 1925, nach zahlreichen Auftritten in Stummfilmen, änderte er seinen Namen in Tom London und behielt diesen Namen für den Rest seiner Karriere. Der erste Film, in dem er unter seinem neuen Namen genannt wurde, war „Winds of Chance“, ein Film über den Ersten Weltkrieg, in dem er „Sgt. Rock London war ein Kunstreiter und Lassowerfer und setzte seine Tricks in zahlreichen Western ein. In der Stummfilmzeit spielte er oft Schurkenrollen, später trat er häufig als Sidekick von Westernstars wie Sunset Carson in mehreren Filmen auf.
Als einer der gefragtesten Charakterdarsteller wirkte er in über 600 Filmen mit. In den 1950er-Jahren hatte London viele Gastauftritte in Fernsehserien, darunter „The Range Rider“ mit Jock Mahoney und Dick Jones. Er spielte auch Sam, den Diener von Helen Ramirez (Katy Jurado), in „High Noon“. Sein letzter Film war „Underworld U.S.A.“ im Jahr 1961, und seine letzten Fernsehrollen hatte er in „Lawman“ und „The Dakotas“.
London starb im Alter von 81 Jahren in seinem Haus in North Hollywood und wurde auf dem Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Glendale, Kalifornien, beigesetzt.
