Mary Pickford
Gladys Marie Smith, bekannt unter ihrem Künstlernamen Mary Pickford, war eine kanadische Schauspielerin, die in den USA lebte, sowie Produzentin, Drehbuchautorin und Gründerin eines Filmstudios. Sie gilt als Pionierin der US-amerikanischen Filmindustrie und ihre Hollywood-Karriere umspannte fünf Jahrzehnte.
Gemeinsam mit ihrem späteren Ehemann, dem Schauspieler und Produzenten Douglas Fairbanks, gründete Pickford die Pickford-Fairbanks Studios und United Artists. Sie war außerdem eines der 36 Gründungsmitglieder der Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Pickford zählt zu den bekanntesten Frauen der Geschichte. In der Stummfilmzeit als „Amerikas Liebling“ gefeiert, ist sie auf der Liste „100 Years…100 Stars“ des American Film Institute (AFI) als 24. größter weiblicher Star der klassischen Hollywood-Ära und als „Mädchen mit den Locken“ verzeichnet.
Sie war einer der ersten Stars, die unter ihrem eigenen Namen auftraten, und eine der beliebtesten Schauspielerinnen der 1910er und 1920er Jahre, die den Beinamen „Königin des Films“ erhielt. Ihr wird zugeschrieben, den Typus der jungen, unschuldigen Frau im Kino geprägt zu haben.
Für ihre erste Rolle in einem Tonfilm, „Coquette“ (1929), wurde sie mit dem zweiten Oscar als Beste Hauptdarstellerin ausgezeichnet. Gegen Ende der 1920er Jahre ließ Pickfords Karriere nach. 1976 erhielt sie in Anerkennung ihrer Verdienste um das amerikanische Kino einen Ehrenoscar.
